Frequently Asked Questions

My institution has purchased the Essential AS Teaching Package under my name. Does this mean that only I can use it, as I have colleagues who need access to it?

By purchasing the Essential AS Teaching Package, all teachers in your institution are entitled to take the password and gain access. Only one payment is needed per institution.

I really need access to the Essential AS Teaching Package on my personal computer at home and on my school computer. Am I allowed to use the same password to gain access on both machines, or will it be necessary for me to re-register and purchase another password for the Essential AS Teaching Package out of my own money?

It is acceptable for you to use the password that has been supplied to gain access to the Essential AS Teaching Package on both your home and school computers. Please note, however, that any update information will only be sent to the address that has been registered.

Installation of the PDF elements of the CD has failed, and I don't seem to be able to get it to work. What is going wrong?

It is likely that your computer has an old version of Adobe Acrobat (say, 3 or 4) and this must be removed from your system before you try to install the Foundation Package and/or Essential AS Teaching Package. To remove any unwanted programs, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Highlight any programs that you want to remove from your system and click the "Add/Remove" button. Your computer will remove all elements that are to do with this program from your machine. If there are any files that are shared with another program, it is best to opt to retain them on your system when prompted, just in case you remove them only to find that another program has been disabled that needed access to the shared files.

I am finding it difficult to work out how to install the elements of the AS and A2 CD, and I think I may have installed half the elements as I gave up half way through. What should I do?

I cannot work out how to view the Red Pen Demo. Can you help?

This demo runs direct from the CD, so you can only access it with the CD still in the CD-drive. Go to the CD Installation page and place a tick mark against Red Pen Marking Software and make sure there are no other tick marks. Click "Next >>" and then click "Continue". This will take you to the Red Pen Demo. We would advise that you print out the ReadMe file from the CD Installation screen as this contains comprehensive instructions for how to navigate around the demo.

I am thinking about purchasing the Essential AS Teaching Package, and need to assess the demo version. However, I cannot work out how to view the Essential AS Teaching Package Demo. Can you help?

This demo runs direct from the CD, so you can only access it with the CD still in the CD-drive. Go to the CD Installation page and place a tick mark against Essential AS Teaching Package (Demo) and make sure there are no other tick marks. Click "Next >>" and then click "Continue". This will take you to the Essential AS Teaching Package Demo. Please note that you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader 5 and Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer installed on your machine in order for the demo to work correctly.

Once installation has been completed, the screen says that I should be able to find the Foundation Package and the Essential AS Teaching Package via the same desktop pathway (Start > Programs > Psychology Press > AS A2 Teaching Packages >). However, I have looked and only the "ASA2 Foundation Package" seems to be there. What has happened to the other package?

On some machines there is an additional Psychology Press pathway created. It is usually situated in the same list as the main pathway and has the same name (check Start > Programs > Psychology Press >) and you should see "Essential AS Teaching Package" under this second "Psychology Press" pathway.

I have typed in my password for the Essential AS Teaching Package, but the computer has not accepted it. What has gone wrong?

Check that you have inserted the correct version of the password (either Mac or PC) and contact us if it still does not work.

How do I get past the User Licence Agreement page?

If you load the CD and find that you get stuck on the User Licence Agreement screen, it may be that the "I agree/I decline" buttons that appear at the base of the grey box are not displayed on your screen. If this is the case, please change your screen setting to 800 x 600 pixels, and the buttons will be revealed. Clicking on "I agree" will then take you on to the next screen.

What do I do if there is a problem loading onto the network?

If your computer is linked up to a network the startup program on the CD-ROM will check the network rather than your individual machine to see if you need to download PowerPoint Viewer. If it detects PowerPoint Viewer on someone else's machine on the network then it deduces that you do not need it and therefore does not install the program. Therefore, when you come to open up the PowerPoint presentations, the system does not have the required software. To get around this, simply dowload PowerPoint Viewer from the web. Go to: http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/Ppview97.aspx.

I cannot access the Acrobat files (hard copy MCQs, OHPs, and Exercises). What has gone wrong?

Check that your computer meets the minimum requirements listed on the inside front cover of the CD. Try re-booting the computer once installation has been completed as this sometimes irons out the problem. Failing that, it might be that you have a previous version of Acrobat on your system that will need to be uninstalled before the program will install Acrobat Reader 4.05 (the de-bugged version of Acrobat Reader 4.0). If all these things have been done, and you are sure that you have the correct version of Acrobat Reader, a simple way to deal with any hiccups is to put the CD in, go to Windows Explorer, and copy the following folders and files onto your hard drive:

Then open Acrobat, and locate these files. Things should work if you download in this way.

What am I to do if I try to get into the PowerPoint presentations and the error message "Master.ppt: Path or file name invalid" comes up?

This error message means that PowerPoint is being executed but it is not loading the presentation file named "Master". This can happen due to either (a) the user's system not being configured to load a file automatically when executing a program, or (b) the installation of the PowerPoint files not being completed successfully.

In the case of (a), try this:

If the file Master cannot be found then it is likely that installation was incomplete (b), in which case do the following:

The PowerPoint Presentations should now run correctly.

After the start of the file installation a dialog box appears that says "Cannot find C:\TEMP\msftqws.pdw\ST6UNST.EXE" and asks if I would like to browse for it. The specified file does not exist anywhere on the available disks, so I have to abort the installation. Can you suggest what I can do?

When I try to access the Exercises and Activities the OHPs come up along with an error message: "The file OLEAUT32.DLL is out of date. The program requires a newer version". What should I do?

This query can be solved by installing the correct versions of certain .dll files as follows:

I am using the CD-Rom with a Mac computer, and there appears to be no exit from the CD other than to turn off the computer. Can you suggest how this can be dealt with?

One of the main problems in producing CD-Roms is the wide variation in the configuration of the user's PC or Mac. It seems that in this case the program is being run from the CD drive, so copy the contents into a new folder on the hard drive and run it from there (the MCQ program will attempt to write to the local drive, and if this is a CD-ROM, then it will fail and hang up). The instructions on the cover say to install the programs first. If the problem still persists having done that then it is due to the operating system, which is another issue altogether!
