Frequently Asked Questions
My institution has purchased the Essential AS Teaching Package under my name. Does this mean that only I can use it, as I have colleagues who need access to it?
By purchasing the Essential AS Teaching Package, all teachers in your institution are entitled to take the password and gain access. Only one payment is needed per institution.
I really need access to the Essential AS Teaching Package on my personal computer at home and on my school computer. Am I allowed to use the same password to gain access on both machines, or will it be necessary for me to re-register and purchase another password for the Essential AS Teaching Package out of my own money?
It is acceptable for you to use the password that has been supplied to gain access to the Essential AS Teaching Package on both your home and school computers. Please note, however, that any update information will only be sent to the address that has been registered.
Installation of the PDF elements of the CD has failed, and I don't seem to be able to get it to work. What is going wrong?
It is likely that your computer has an old version of Adobe Acrobat (say, 3 or 4) and this must be removed from your system before you try to install the Foundation Package and/or Essential AS Teaching Package. To remove any unwanted programs, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Highlight any programs that you want to remove from your system and click the "Add/Remove" button. Your computer will remove all elements that are to do with this program from your machine. If there are any files that are shared with another program, it is best to opt to retain them on your system when prompted, just in case you remove them only to find that another program has been disabled that needed access to the shared files.
I am finding it difficult to work out how to install the elements of the AS and A2 CD, and I think I may have installed half the elements as I gave up half way through. What should I do?
- The first thing to do is to uninstall all unwanted components off your machine via Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Make sure that there are no current CD elements, or previous CD elements, on your system before you attempt the installation.
- Then close all applications, put the CD in the CD drive and you will see the book cover whizz across the screen. If this does not happen within a few seconds, go to Start > Run and select CDSTARTUP.EXE from either the E or D drive (depending on which drive your computer uses to run CDs).
- The CD Licence Agreement screen will come up, so read it and click "I accept the agreement".
- The Introduction to this CD-Rom screen will come up. From this screen you can register for the Essential AS Teaching Package via the large button at the base of the screen. Read the introduction and click "Continue".
- This will lead you to the CD Installation screen:
- You will notice two "Internet link" buttons; one of these will allow you to register for the Foundation Package and purchase the Essential AS Teaching Package (optional), and the other will allow you to request more details on the Red Pen Marking Software (available summer 2003) and allow you to access screen shots of the software. It is not necessary for you to click on these unless you want to; doing so will take you to the relevant web pages.
- Before leaving the CD Installation screen it is advisable to print out the ReadMe file for reference at this point (use the pdf version if you already have Acrobat Reader; use the Notepad version if not) as you may need to refer to it if you run into problems.
- Place ticks against the elements you would like to install and click "Next >>". It is not necessary for you to try and install the demos, as these run directly from the CD. You can select the other elements for installation (Foundation Package, Essential AS Teaching Package, Acrobat Reader 5, and Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer). If in doubt about Acrobat and PowerPoint, select them anyway as the CD will check to see if you already have these elements before they are installed.
- Note that each element will be loaded separately, so be patient. The Foundation Package will take the longest, so follow on-screen instructions and prompts.
- When each element has finished loading, click "OK" when prompted and the next element will be installed. Installing all elements can take up to 20 minutes, so sit tight.
- Once the installation process for all selected elements has been completed a message will come up that confirms this. It is advisable to re-boot at this point.
- It might be that the program has been unable to install your desktop shortcuts properly, but do not worry about this as you will be able to access the programs via Start > Programs > Psychology Press...
I cannot work out how to view the Red Pen Demo. Can you help?
This demo runs direct from the CD, so you can only access it with the CD still in the CD-drive. Go to the CD Installation page and place a tick mark against Red Pen Marking Software and make sure there are no other tick marks. Click "Next >>" and then click "Continue". This will take you to the Red Pen Demo. We would advise that you print out the ReadMe file from the CD Installation screen as this contains comprehensive instructions for how to navigate around the demo.
I am thinking about purchasing the Essential AS Teaching Package, and need to assess the demo version. However, I cannot work out how to view the Essential AS Teaching Package Demo. Can you help?
This demo runs direct from the CD, so you can only access it with the CD still in the CD-drive. Go to the CD Installation page and place a tick mark against Essential AS Teaching Package (Demo) and make sure there are no other tick marks. Click "Next >>" and then click "Continue". This will take you to the Essential AS Teaching Package Demo. Please note that you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader 5 and Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer installed on your machine in order for the demo to work correctly.
Once installation has been completed, the screen says that I should be able to find the Foundation Package and the Essential AS Teaching Package via the same desktop pathway (Start > Programs > Psychology Press > AS A2 Teaching Packages >). However, I have looked and only the "ASA2 Foundation Package" seems to be there. What has happened to the other package?
On some machines there is an additional Psychology Press pathway created. It is usually situated in the same list as the main pathway and has the same name (check Start > Programs > Psychology Press >) and you should see "Essential AS Teaching Package" under this second "Psychology Press" pathway.
I have typed in my password for the Essential AS Teaching Package, but the computer has not accepted it. What has gone wrong?
Check that you have inserted the correct version of the password (either Mac or PC) and contact us if it still does not work.
How do I get past the User Licence Agreement page?
If you load the CD and find that you get stuck on the User Licence Agreement screen, it may be that the "I agree/I decline" buttons that appear at the base of the grey box are not displayed on your screen. If this is the case, please change your screen setting to 800 x 600 pixels, and the buttons will be revealed. Clicking on "I agree" will then take you on to the next screen.
What do I do if there is a problem loading onto the network?
If your computer is linked up to a network the startup program on the CD-ROM will check the network rather than your individual machine to see if you need to download PowerPoint Viewer. If it detects PowerPoint Viewer on someone else's machine on the network then it deduces that you do not need it and therefore does not install the program. Therefore, when you come to open up the PowerPoint presentations, the system does not have the required software. To get around this, simply dowload PowerPoint Viewer from the web. Go to: http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/Ppview97.aspx.
I cannot access the Acrobat files (hard copy MCQs, OHPs, and Exercises). What has gone wrong?
Check that your computer meets the minimum requirements listed on the inside front cover of the CD. Try re-booting the computer once installation has been completed as this sometimes irons out the problem. Failing that, it might be that you have a previous version of Acrobat on your system that will need to be uninstalled before the program will install Acrobat Reader 4.05 (the de-bugged version of Acrobat Reader 4.0). If all these things have been done, and you are sure that you have the correct version of Acrobat Reader, a simple way to deal with any hiccups is to put the CD in, go to Windows Explorer, and copy the following folders and files onto your hard drive:
- OHPs.pdf (single file) within the OHPs folder.
- Exact.pdf (single file) within the ExAct folder.
- MCTs.pdf (single file) within the Hard folder.
Then open Acrobat, and locate these files. Things should work if you download in this way.
What am I to do if I try to get into the PowerPoint presentations and the error message "Master.ppt: Path or file name invalid" comes up?
This error message means that PowerPoint is being executed but it is not loading the presentation file named "Master". This can happen due to either (a) the user's system not being configured to load a file automatically when executing a program, or (b) the installation of the PowerPoint files not being completed successfully.
In the case of (a), try this:
- In the Main Menu of the ASA2 contents program click on PowerPoint Presentations. (PowerPoint loads, and the error message appears.)
- Clear the error message.
- Select File > Open. A window labeled "Open" appears. Next to where it says "Look in", if the folder is currently "ppt" then select the file Master and click the Open button. Otherwise, browse to find the folder Program Files/ASA2Psychology/ppt and select the file Master and click the Open button.
If the file Master cannot be found then it is likely that installation was incomplete (b), in which case do the following:
- Insert the CD.
- If the CD starts up automatically, select Exit.
- Explore the CD by selecting from the Start button: Start > Programs > Windows Explorer.
- Click once on the CD-ROM drive, and locate the folder named ASA2CD.
- Click once on the folder named Install.
- Double-click the WinZip file called ASA2CD.
- Scroll down to locate the file called Master.ppt.
- Click once on the file Master.ppt.
- Click on the Extract button.
- In the entry Extract to select the folder: C:\Program Files\ASA2 Psychology\ppt.
- Repeat steps 7 to 10 for the files A2 Master.ppt and AS Master.ppt.
The PowerPoint Presentations should now run correctly.
After the start of the file installation a dialog box appears that says "Cannot find C:\TEMP\msftqws.pdw\ST6UNST.EXE" and asks if I would like to browse for it. The specified file does not exist anywhere on the available disks, so I have to abort the installation. Can you suggest what I can do?
- Search for a copy of the file ASA2_CD.cab in the Windows folder (or Winnt folder on NT). If found, delete it.
- Setup places the .cab file in the Windows or Winnt folder and removes them at the end of a successful Setup. However, if the installation program exits abnormally, the .cab files may be left on the system.
- In the windows\temp folder (or the folder specified by the TEMP environment variable on NT), look for a subfolder named msftqws.pdw. If found, delete the msftqws.pdw subfolder.
- For Windows NT: locate the following files. If any of these files have a size of 0 bytes, then delete the file:
- \winnt\system32\msvbvm60.dll
- \winnt\system32\vb6stkit.dll
- \winnt\st6unst.exe
- For Windows 98: locate the following files. If any of these files have a size of 0 bytes, then delete the file:
- \windows\system\msvbvm60.dll
- \windows\system\vb6stkit.dll
- \windows\st6unst.exe
- Run Setup.exe again.
When I try to access the Exercises and Activities the OHPs come up along with an error message: "The file OLEAUT32.DLL is out of date. The program requires a newer version". What should I do?
This query can be solved by installing the correct versions of certain .dll files as follows:
- Place the CD in CD-ROM drive.
- Using Windows Explorer find the folder on the CD-ROM drive called MCT. Open it and double-click Setup. This will install the mct student version along with the appropriate .dll files.
I am using the CD-Rom with a Mac computer, and there appears to be no exit from the CD other than to turn off the computer. Can you suggest how this can be dealt with?
One of the main problems in producing CD-Roms is the wide variation in the configuration of the user's PC or Mac. It seems that in this case the program is being run from the CD drive, so copy the contents into a new folder on the hard drive and run it from there (the MCQ program will attempt to write to the local drive, and if this is a CD-ROM, then it will fail and hang up). The instructions on the cover say to install the programs first. If the problem still persists having done that then it is due to the operating system, which is another issue altogether!
