FAQ
When I try to install the CD I get an error message saying that a Windows component called MCI32.OCX is missing.
The system file MCI32.OCX is missing from some earlier versions of Windows. Our technicians have created a downloadable patch which installs and registers this file, which can be downloaded from www.a-levelpsychology.co.uk/cdfix.zip.
Download this file to your desktop (in most cases, right-click the link and choose "Save As"), unzip it using free software such as WinZip, then double click on the setup.exe file to run it.
After installing this patch, you should be able to install your A Level CD.
When I try to run the CD, I get an error message saying "Components 'RICHTX32.OCX' or one of its dependencies is not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid."
Your computer does not have the latest version of the Microsoft Windows run-time files on it, called the Visual Basic 6.0 SP5: Run-Time Redistribution Pack. These files can be installed simply by going to this page on the Microsoft website and following the download and installation instructions.
When I try to open an Adobe Acrobat PDF file, the software asks me to upgrade to version 4 of Acrobat - and I'm already running version 4 or higher.
Sometimes the Windows registry doesn't update properly. We've developed a patch to fix this which can be downloaded from www.a-levelpsychology.co.uk/acrobatupdate.zip.
Download this file to your desktop (in most cases, right-click the link and choose "Save As"), unzip it using free software such as WinZip, then double click on the update.exe file to run it.
After installing this patch, the software should no longer try to make you 'upgrade' to version 4 of Adobe Acrobat.
My institution has purchased the Complete Teacher and Student Materials/Student Materials under my name. Does this mean that only I can use it, as I have colleagues who need access to it?
By purchasing the Complete Teacher and Student Materials, all teachers/students in your institution are entitled to use it, as a multi-user licence is included with each CD. Only one payment is needed per institution.
I really need access to the Complete Teacher and Student Materials/Student Materials on both my personal computer at home and on my school computer. Am I allowed to install it on both machines, or will it be necessary for me to purchase another CD out of my own money?
It is acceptable for you to use the Complete Teacher and Student Materials/Student Materials on both your home and school computers. Please note, however, that it is not acceptable for students to install the Student Materials on their machines at home.
Installation of PDF elements of the CD has failed, and I don't seem to be able to get it to work. What is going wrong?
Make sure you have installed Adobe Acrobat Reader 5. The option to do this is at the beginning of the installation process on the Installation Options screen. If you have an old version of Adobe Acrobat (say, 3 or 4) this must be removed from your system before you try to install the Complete Teacher and Student Material/Student Materials. To remove any unwanted programs, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Highlight any programs that you want to remove from your system and click the "Add/Remove" button. Your computer will remove all elements associated with this program from your machine. If there are any files that are shared with another program, it is best to opt to retain them on your system when prompted, just in case you remove them only to find that another program has been disabled that needed access to the shared files.
I get halfway through installation and am told that there is not enough room on my computer. What can I do?
When you run the installation program you are given the option to install the package on any drive (except of course a CD-ROM drive). The default is to install on the C drive, which is the local hard drive on most users' machines. However, some users may be on a network and their root drive may be named differently (e.g., F drive) in which case simply select this drive when prompted to select an install directory.
